About us

We came into existence and continue because of the generous funding and support of the                                                                  Central New York Community Foundation.

We are an unincorporated nonprofit organization dedicated to literacy with the fiscal sponsorship of the Oneida Public Library. Guided by an executive director, 501(c)3 compliant bylaws and Managing Partners, both the Partners and the Coalition members meet regularly.
We are about the business of facilitating needs analysis, problem-solving, project management, public relations, training, coordination and resourcing for the dedicated groups addressing literacy. The goal is to create synergies that infuse literacy throughout the lifespan leading to an improved future. We will achieve, in the words of the national experts at Literacy PowerLine, “100% literacy through 100% community involvement.”

Huge strides have already been made in adult education/workforce development and early childhood literacy.

Our leading programs are:

1. Madison County Reads AheadTutoring ESL Diana & Cindy

MCRA is the county’s ONLY free, one-on-one, ABE, ESL ADULT EDUCATION program.  If an adult wants to better themselves and improve job skills, all they have to do is contact the Program Director, Tara Truett at ttruet@midyork.org. A tutor and material will be found; the nearest library will provide the space and meetings will be individualized to suit the client.

2. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

The LCMC has now signed  up over 1300 families in Madison County, we’re aiming for 3000.

The Imagination Library provides FREE BOOKS for children from birth to five. High quality, age appropriate books are mailed to the child’s home EVERY MONTH. This has been the LCMC NY’s successful initiative for every part of the county. Our “MADISON MODEL” uses the local public library to service the area of their local school district. All you have to do is fill out the registration form available on our site (click here) or at your local public library (in Munnsville, Madison, Brookfield and South Otselic–go to the school’s main office.) Join forces with the Literacy Coalition of Madison County NY to help improve the lives of all Madison County citizens through literacy services for all ages.

Your tax deductible donation

will help us continue funding the proven success of these literacy programs for our county. Use the secure DONATION BUTTON sponsored by the CNY Community Foundation our major sponsor.

Our greatest support in this regard has come from a local family,

the Dorothy C. Lichtenberg-DeHart Memorial Fund.

Another major supporter has been the  Gorman Foundation which, beside numerous grants has generously provided office space in their new state of the art Gorman Foundation Community Center. Finally, a steady supporter for many years has been Hamilton’s William R. McNeice III Foundation.
