About us

CNYCF-Logo-2009-REVISED

We came into existence and continue because of the generous funding and support of the Central New York Community Foundation.

We are an unincorporated nonprofit organization dedicated to literacy with the fiscal sponsorship of the Cazenovia Public Library. Guided by an executive director, 501(c)3 compliant bylaws and Managing Partners, both the Partners and the Coalition members meet regularly.

We are about the business of facilitating needs analysis, problem-solving, project management, public relations, training, coordination and resourcing for the dedicated groups addressing literacy. The goal is to create synergies that infuse literacy throughout the lifespan leading to an improved future. We will achieve, in the words of the national experts at Literacy PowerLine, “100% literacy through 100% community involvement.”

Huge strides have already been made in adult education/workforce development and early childhood literacy.

Our leading programs are:

Madison County Reads AheadTutoring ESL Diana & Cindy

MCRA is the county’s only free, one-on-one, Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and  preparation for a high school equivalency diploma.  Adults who wants to better themselves and improve job skills can contact the Program Director Tara Truett at ttruet@midyork.org. A tutor and materials will be provided; the nearest library will offer space to meet and sessions will be individualized to suit each client.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

More than 1300 families in Madison County receive free books in the mail each month.

The Imagination Library provides free books for children from birth to five. High quality, age appropriate books are mailed to the child’s home every month. This successful initiative reaches every part of the county. We use the local libraries to service the area of their local school district. Families can register by filling out the form available here (click here) or at their local public library (in Munnsville, Madison, Brookfield and South Otselic–go to the school’s main office.)

Our greatest support has come from a local family:

the Dorothy C. Lichtenberg-DeHart Memorial Fund.

Another major supporter has been the  Gorman Foundation which, beside numerous grants has generously provided office space in their state of the art Gorman Foundation Community Center. Finally, a steady supporter for many years has been Hamilton’s William R. McNeice III Foundation.
